Well I finally got a computer for home so I don't waste so much time at work because of my addiction to thee zone. Last night I set up my laptop on the dining room table to use it, and of course my cat, Smokey, thought it was a new toy for him. I bought a regular keyboard to attach to it because I don't like the laptop keyboard. So as I was typing away on one keyboard, he was plopping himself down on the other. I sure had to do a lot of deleting. I just have removed him from the table about a dozen times. Then he started hiding behind the laptop screen and just reaching one paw around to touch keys on the keyboard. Finally, he stayed off the table after I had botted him off for about the twentieth time and fell asleep on my computer case lying next to my chair.
I think I'm either going to have to hide in my room with the door shut or put him in another room behind a closed door when I want to use my computer. He has every toy ever made for cats, but is more interested in my toys. LOL
Cats adore computers and Smokey seems to be having a great time..Morticia, Andy and Alvin, are all convinced the pc is a giant cat playground.smile..Maybe Smokey is trying to lay claim to the laptop, he sounds very determined and his lying on the keyboard, hints at a need for attention. He's obviously intelligent and he is asking for more interaction with you, so he is trying to say stop playing on that feckin laptop and talk to me!..Cats eh they are too smart for their own good. smile.
I just got a cat... she's sniffed my computer a little, but she's not that interested in it. She'll curl up beside me and put her paws on my lap (between me and the computer), but she's great about people toys. :) Now all I gotta do is get her off my kitchen counters!
oo yes, the cats love to play the catch the moving fingers on the keyboard game.
I think instead of locking either of you up I'd give it a bit and see if smoky calms down. We use to have cats, and eventually they did calm down, but if you don't keep him exposed to it there is no chance he will.
they say cats are more inteligent than we give them credit for, maybe your cat is trying to communicate with you?

Purrrringly going out on a bit of a limb, well more so a larger branch for Tigress-cat as it were is peering down from lofty branches of the tree just on the other side of your windows and having taken notices oft of Smokey from time to time. Ah so Smokey is this kitty’s name ponders Tigress-cat… Well I’ve heard your name made mention and cat friendly it seems you are for cat-lover it is… “if only” ponders Tigress-cat there were a cat-lover in me life, but alas I know only the comfort of my branches were in wait I am *thinking Smokey might one day come out and play with me* where leaves tickle me and wolves have given me chase *why I sit here up on this branch* ….oh dear cat-lover can you not understand that all those times that Smokey was being cherished upon so lavishly and I took note of this from my towering branch, well, hmmm now, don’t you understand that now all this quality time goes rather to the thumping on of a keyboard and well if you receive enjoyment from this activity then so must Smokey… Maybe one day you will forget to close your door and I can come in for it does appear to be an activity stimulating and to think that maybe I could type an E-mail to Dobbin’s house guests. Purrrrring from my branch…. Tigress-cat
my cat saige the only one of the two that doesn't hide all the time, loves my computer but isn't all that crazy about the keyboard all the time, I mean each time he discovers it he tries to push buttons, but when jaws says something he jumps back like somebody shot him, kinda funny
Oh yes, when I had a laptop, Shadow would do very similar things. I think cats like the warmth and lights that come from laptops. Sounds like Smoky was also playing with you, once he realized you didn't want him messing with the laptop. Something like a mischievous child, which many cats act like. I now have a desktop computer, so Shadow can't do the same things he used to. However, he has always liked to try to lay against my BrailleNote when I'm reading. I wonder if he thinks I'm petting the Braille display instead of him? Grin.
Well, this original post from me was written more than a year ago when I first got my laptop. Smokey is now very used to it and doesn't show much interest. He does sometimes still jump up on the table when I am at the computer, but he is careful to step over the keyboard and not on it. I'm sure if I had vision, I'd be pushing him out of the way because he would be blocking my view of the monitor, but since I don't, it doesn't matter to me if he wants to stand there for a few seconds sort of straddling the keyboard.
Wow, Becky. If can block the monitor, he must be one beefy cat. Advent hit some keys on the keyboard while I was trying to Register Kurzsweil when I first got it almost three years ago. He really made a mess of things, and I was a good while getting it fixed. Happily, he ignores the computer now.

Missy ignores mine unless I let her on my lap while I am working.. then its only a matter of time before she climbs up past the external monitor and tries to sit on the laptop keyboard above everything else.. Of course this is the point where fur flies, and yowling can be heard for miles as I attempt to retrieve her. Its amazing how a cat can make it sound like you are hurting them when all you are doing is removing them from a mischief making opportunity.
lol I don't really know what to say here, as I don't have a cat. The post about the cat frightened of JAWS speech made me laugh.
I normally use headphones when at the computer since I live with someone and want privacy. But when I am home alone I don't use the headphones and sometimes Smokey comes running when the computer boots up and JAWS starts talking. But he soon goes back to whatever he was doing in the first place. He has long since gotten bored with my computer. Occasionally he still walks across the table when I am working, but he knows better than to step on any keys now.
